Joining a FiveM server safely with a cfx.re code
What you need, what a cfx.re code is for, three ways to connect to a FiveM server and the security habits to keep.

FiveM lets you play GTA V on community servers, especially role-play servers. Many of these servers are shared as a cfx.re link or code. Here's how to use one without falling into the most common traps.
What you need
- A legitimate copy of GTA V on PC (bought on Steam, the Epic Games Store or the Rockstar Games Launcher). FiveM needs it to work.
- The FiveM client, downloaded only from the official site fivem.net. Never install a "FiveM" offered anywhere else.
- Depending on the server, a linked Cfx.re account and Discord account. Many role-play servers manage access and whitelists through Discord.
What is a cfx.re code for?
A join link looks like cfx.re/join/abc123. The final part is the server's code, a shortcut registered with Cfx.re that points to the server's real address. This code has two advantages. It's easier to share than an IP address, and it keeps working if the server moves to another host.
On Rankserveurs, when a server is joined by code, the listing shows that code with a button to copy it.
Three ways to connect
- From FiveM's server list. Search for the server's name, then check it's the right one (exact name, description, number of slots).
- From the console. In FiveM, press F8 to open the console, type
connect cfx.re/join/abc123with the right code, then press Enter. - From the link. Open
cfx.re/join/abc123in your browser, and the page offers to open FiveM and start the connection.
Check it's the right server
Some servers copy the name or artwork of a well-known server, so take a few precautions before investing time.
- Get the code from a reliable source (the server's listing, its official website or its official Discord).
- Compare the name shown while loading with the one announced by the community.
- Be wary of a link sent by a stranger in a private message.
Security habits
- No file to install. FiveM downloads the server's resources (maps, vehicles, scripts) itself when you connect. A "launcher", "pack" or executable sent by private message "so you can join" is a red flag.
- Nobody needs your password. Not your Rockstar account's, not Cfx.re's, not Discord's, and not your two-factor codes. No staff member should ever ask for them.
- No cheating. Cheat menus and other unauthorised tools expose you to a ban from the server, or even from the platform, and are a common source of malware.
- Your data stays yours. A role-play application may ask for your age or experience, but never send identity documents or bank details over Discord.
- Look at the shop. Many servers sell in-game advantages (vehicles, queue priority…). On Rankserveurs, monetization is declared by the owner. Compare it with what you see on the server before paying for anything.
If connecting doesn't work
- Server full or queue. Popular servers often have a queue, so wait your turn rather than relaunching in a loop.
- Scheduled restarts. Many servers restart at fixed times, and announcements are usually on their Discord.
- "Unavailable" measurement on Rankserveurs. A failed measurement doesn't prove the server is down. Check its Discord before drawing conclusions.
In short
- Legitimate GTA V on PC and FiveM downloaded from fivem.net.
- A cfx.re code taken from the source (listing, official website or Discord).
- Connect from the list, the console (F8, then
connect) or the link. - No file to install, no password to give.
- A shop checked before paying.
