Understanding wipes on Rust

Before choosing a Rust server, learn about the type of wipe (map or blueprints), the forced wipe on the first Thursday of the month, the server's schedule, rates and group limits.

Published on 3 min read

In Rust, nothing is permanent. Every server is reset regularly. These resets, called wipes, set the rhythm of a server's whole life. Understanding how they work helps you choose the right server and the right moment to join it.

What is a wipe?

A wipe erases all or part of the progress on a server. There are two kinds.

  • A map wipe erases buildings, container contents, inventories and the map. The server starts again on a fresh map, sometimes with a different size or layout.
  • A blueprint wipe ("BP wipe") also erases the blueprints you've learned to craft items. You really start from scratch.

In practice, a blueprint wipe comes with a map wipe, but the reverse isn't true. Item skins tied to your Steam account aren't affected.

The forced wipe on the first Thursday of the month

Every month, on the first Thursday, Facepunch releases a game update that forces a map wipe on every server. That's the "forced wipe". The exact time is announced by Facepunch, and for European players it usually falls in the late afternoon or evening.

Blueprint wipes remain each server's decision, except for rare updates that force them too. That's why you'll see servers advertise "monthly BP wipe" or "BP wipe on forced only".

The most common schedules

Between two forced wipes, each server chooses its own schedule.

  • On a monthly schedule, there's a single wipe, the forced one. Runs are long and reward consistency.
  • Every two weeks means one wipe on the forced date and another mid-month.
  • On a weekly schedule, the server wipes every week, often on Thursday to stay aligned with the forced wipe. It's ideal if you play a lot in short bursts.
  • Some very busy servers even wipe twice a week.

On Rankserveurs, the declared schedule appears in the listing's features ("Wipe schedule", "Wipe type"), and the dates announced by owners are gathered in the calendar.

Choosing the right moment

When you arrive matters as much as the server itself.

  • On wipe day, everyone starts on equal terms. It's the liveliest moment, and the most contested.
  • In the following days, the best-organised groups have pulled ahead. Joining mid-wipe calls for more caution, especially solo.
  • At the end of a wipe, there are fewer players and bases are very developed. Some use it to learn the game more calmly, others wait for the next wipe.

Other settings to check

  • Look at the group limit (solo, duo, trio, quad or no limit). Also check what the rules say about alliances between groups.
  • For rates, a "1x" server gathers at the base game's pace, while "2x", "5x" or "10x" multiply the resources you collect. The higher the rates, the faster the progression, and the closer together the wipes usually are.
  • For the category, the game sorts servers into Official (run by Facepunch), Community (vanilla or lightly modified, often called "vanilla+") and Modded (heavily modified, with kits, teleportation, events…).
  • Think about map size and population. A large, sparsely populated map doesn't offer the same experience as a small, full one.

Using the Rankserveurs calendar

In the calendar, filter on the Rust game and the "Wipe" type to see the next announced dates. Keep two things in mind.

  • Dates are announced by owners. Always confirm on the server's Discord, especially the day before.
  • Calendar times are shown in Paris time. A server may announce its wipe in its own time zone or in UTC, so convert before planning.

In short

  1. Map wipes and blueprint wipes aren't the same thing.
  2. On the first Thursday of the month, every server wipes its map.
  3. Choose a wipe schedule that fits your playing time.
  4. Check the group limit, rates and category.
  5. Confirm dates on the server's Discord.
